This is a painting I felt compelled to do. It shows my daughter days/hours before she was due to give birth. We were all on tenterhooks, waiting for things to 'kick off' .... I really enjoyed painting this little study, it has many of the elements
I never tire of painting; glass with all the distortions and
reflections, the never ending challenge of trying to portray the
delicacy of flowers, and fruit with the colours and textures they offer. I have added the initial ebauche used to establish the composition for those of you who like to see something of the process.
This small plein-air study was painted several months ago when the weather was somewhat warmer.
It
depicts a crab and lobster stall at Wells next-to-sea, on the north
Norfolk coast. I am somewhat of a rookie with plein-air but this subject
suited me because I enjoy painting figures. I am hoping to do a lot more of these studies, having organized my clothing and art materials to allow me to paint in all weathers, and locations. It is going to be my new challenge for 2017.Liz Balkwillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14793137711427141331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734050756048463569.post-51021328541912015662016-09-10T11:06:00.001-07:002016-09-10T11:06:44.718-07:00Ray of Sunshine

This portait is a pastel of the Steve the skip driver (and drummer par
excellence) who emptied and delivered skips for us after our house
fire. I approached him with a certain amount of trepidation; it was the
tatoos and mohican that were the initial attraction but as soon as we
spoke I could see his warmth. I hope I captured something of that.....Liz Balkwillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14793137711427141331noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734050756048463569.post-17562615793176316412016-03-01T10:08:00.000-08:002016-03-01T10:08:07.070-08:00Born to be mild

Society of Portrait Painters' Annual Exhibition. Two years ago, we
were still reeling from the shock of our cottage being destroyed by
fire. We lived on site for the 20 months it took to rebuild and 14
skips of rubbish were removed over that time. Steve came to deliver and
collect skips and ended up modelling for me :-)
I think I made lemonade from those lemons....

This is a conte study of Tom completed in a single sitting during a
drop-in life session I have been running for the past few years. We
meet fortnightly with the intention of working on one pose for the
morning. This was drawn on canson mi-teinte paper (smooth side). for the Pastel Society annual open exhibition. The Private view is
tomorrow at the Mall Galleries and I am very much looking forward to it!

Day three of the challenge and this small oil painting 5x7 'Fortune cookies' seems an appropriate choice for the week of the Chinese New Year. Once again, one of my favourite models Neeley, was the subject for
'Soak' . It was a fun pastel to attempt due to the wet skin and the
bubbles in the bath. Neeley has such a tranquil beautiful demeanor that
anything else is down to her!Liz Balkwillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14793137711427141331noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734050756048463569.post-69845238899364105112016-02-08T09:53:00.002-08:002016-02-08T09:53:57.806-08:00Elevenses

This is the second painting of my five day challenge to post a painting
each day. (see my facebook page Liz Balkwill Paintings to see more.) I
am once again throwiing down the gauntlett to anyone out there who
would like to be nominated to continue the challenge.
This was the
first pastel I got accepted at the Pastel Society annual exhibitiopn
(Mall Galleries). It is several years ago now, but as this year's
exhibition opens two weeks today and I have three new works showing, it
seems rather apt!Liz Balkwillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14793137711427141331noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734050756048463569.post-63778320421704235162016-01-30T09:15:00.000-08:002016-01-30T09:15:29.129-08:00Maurice

This is a portrait of Maurice who taught me during my art school days.
Although almost four decades have passed and he is now over eighty, he
doesn't look a great deal different and is still passionate about
painting.
We are fast approaching the end of January and Spring is just around the corner, well almost!
I
thought this cheery little oil painting of Narcissi in a brown bottle
would fit the DPW challenge quite well, the place we all look forward to
being is ...... Spring! :-)
I painted this on gessoboard (ampersand) which is now available in the UK, thank goodness. I really like the surface, and it is so good not to have to prep all those boards..... working on it. These are my progress shots and a snapshot of the sitter from my viewpoint.
I have to confess to liking this one. It is not often an artist says
this; the artist's curse is that they only see fault in their own work.
This one seemed to go together in a more pleasing way than usual which
is why I held on to it for the Royal Oil Painters Institute annual
exhibition which opens tomorrow at the Mall Galleries in London.Liz Balkwillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14793137711427141331noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734050756048463569.post-59008040644756172932015-11-29T10:35:00.000-08:002015-11-29T10:35:03.085-08:00

This small pastel depicts a typical weekend breakfast ideally with time to
read the Sunday papers and sip the coffee. (My husband even made the damson jam that accompanies it.) The pastel is currently showing
with the Guild of Norwich Painters at Westcliffe Gallery in Sheringham,

It has been a while since I showed anything here, but i have not been
idle, just very distracted moving back into our house after 21 months of
re-build after our fire. Lots of work to show you that I have been too
busy to post; This is one of eight paintings available at 'A feast of
food in art' exhibition, currently showing at Llewellyn Alexander
Gallery, London. The exhibition runs until 6th December.Liz Balkwillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14793137711427141331noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3734050756048463569.post-47326674168941491182015-09-03T13:34:00.000-07:002015-09-03T13:34:28.221-07:00Champagne and OystersThis is a new departure for me as it is a commissioned still-life. A
birthday present for a 60th birthday to someone who clearly has become
accustomed to the finer things life has to offer. You know who you are
;-) Belated birthday wishes!
I found this little carafe on e-bay and just loved it! I've done a
couple of paintings on this theme - sadly the tomatoes are not home
grown, but who knows, next year when we are settled we may have a garden
again! :-)Liz Balkwillhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14793137711427141331noreply@blogger.com0
